The Europe Certificate of Conformity (CE Mark) is a mark that indicates that the product to which it is attached complies with EU product safety directives. These EU directives apply to all products to be put into service for the first time within the European Economic Area.

The CE mark indicates the product's compliance with EU legislation and thus enables the free movement of products on the European market. By placing the CE mark on the product, the manufacturer declares under his sole responsibility that the product meets all the legal requirements for the CE mark, which means that the product can be sold throughout the European Economic Area (EEA, the 28 EU member states and the countries of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein). This also applies to products manufactured in other countries that are sold in the EEA.

However, not all products must bear the CE mark, only the product categories listed in the specific EU directives on CE marking.

The CE marking does not mean that the product was manufactured in the EEA, but only indicates that the product has been assessed before being placed on the market and therefore meets the applicable legislative requirements (e.g. . It means that the manufacturer has verified that the product meets all relevant essential requirements (e.g. . health and safety requirements or environmental protection requirements) set out in the relevant directive(s) and, if specified in the directive(s), have it reviewed by an independent conformity assessment body.

It is the manufacturer's responsibility to carry out a conformity assessment, create a set of technical documentation, issue a declaration of conformity and affix the CE mark to the product. Distributors must check that the product is CE marked and that the required supporting documentation is in order. If the product is imported from outside the EEA, the importer must verify that the manufacturer has taken the necessary steps and that the documentation is available on request.

Benefits of CE Marking Certification:

  • CE marking provides manufacturers with market access to the whole European Economic Area, since countries within this area may not restrict the placing on the market of products bearing the CE marking.
  • It guarantees that the product conforms to the regulations in the specific directive
  • It is a guarantee for the manufacturer that the product is safe for consumers
  • It may significantly reduce damage claims and liability premiums.
